Stakeholders-Town of Colonie

       The town of Colonie consists of many hamlets that appropriately organizes a  population of approximately 80,000 people.  Colonie’s history is very rich, as it was once part of the Rensselaerwyck manor and the city of Watervliet, established by the Dutch, one of the first groups to settle in the United States. In the middle part of the 20th century, Colonie flourished with economic and suburban development. The addition of Rt. 9 and I-787 changed the way people commuted in Colonie. The central part of Colonie has been extended into the Shaker community, which consequently encompasses the Albany International Airport established in (____).  The town of Colonie was What is it ranked today? When was it ranked 6th? ranked the sixth safest place to live across the United States.

In the town, the population is spread out with: 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  As far as education in the town, there are four public school districts that serve the town of Colonie. This includes the South Colonie Central School District, North Colonie Central Schools, Watervliet City School District and Menands Union Free School District. The Town Department prides itself on economic development, as Supervisor Paula Mahan looks to enhance, “The Colonie Chamber of Commerce.” Further plans and businesses look to pop up in the (beloved) Use a different word(s) town in the next couple of years.

Political Dimensions-Town of Colonie

The town of Colonie has a few key political components. First, there is the town board.  Nicole Hernandez, Deputy Supervisor, is in charge of Civil Service Resources and the Park/Recreation Departments. In addition, Nicole Hernandez serves as the Town Attorney.  Next, there is Robert D. Becker (Councilman), who is in charge of Planning and Economic Development. As well as his previously stated Councilman duties, Mr. Becker serves as a Town Clerk who is in charge of the Town Police.

Nevertheless, the most important political figure in the town of Colonie is Democrat Paula Mahan. Ms. Mahan was elected in November 2007, defeating long-time favorite Mary Brizzell.  Supervisor Mahan’s victory was seen as one of the bigger upsets in recent history. On the town website, Supervisor Mahan declared to keep the citizens of Colonie informed and strongly encourages questions and concerns at the local Town Hall. What has she done that is significant?
