Implementation
- This program is a classroom-based curriculum to be used in health education, social studies, psychology or other areas of instruction. It consists of ten 50 minute sessions. These sessions involve role playing of conflict resolutions as well as handouts of presented materials. The teacher may employ the use of didactic instruction, group discussion, small group activity, role play, homework and multi-media.
Evaluation
- Two evaluations have been done on this curriculum. The first evaluation was done comparing middle school youth exposed to the program with students who participated in a different conflict resolution curriculum. The evaluation found significant effects from both curricula in regards to frequency of fighting, and use of violence. The second evaluation examined the effects of VPC on high school students as part of a larger community-wide violence prevention effort. This analysis revealed that those students exposed to VPC showed a significant reduction in suspension rates. The evaluation does acknowledge the fact that while these results may be significant, the evaluation design was limited.
