Goal Statement   one sentence that further defines the topic

  • To develop ways to better protect undocumented residents who are vulnerable because the criminal element knows many are reluctant to contact the police.

Policy Options / Model Programs   specific policies or program models, grouped by type, that are profiled

  • Education of Rights: After research it has become apparent that immigrants have not been fully aware of the local legislation protecting their civil rights. The purpose of this approach is to make immigrants, especially undocumented residents, aware of their rights in the United States.  The effective use, enhancement, and development of current programs would be essential in educating the immigrant population.  It is also proposed that these programs increase their outreach efforts; that the programs actively seek to educate undocumented residents in the area.

    •

  • Education of Services Available: State and federal summaries about immigration victimization have reported that undocumented residents tend not to submit statements about crime to the law enforcement for three reoccurring reasons: a) they fear deportation and are unaware that law enforcement cannot refuse services because of immigration status nor can they relay immigration status to other officials; b) are uneducated about the resources available to them; or c) they are suspicious of publicized services.  It is proposed that undocumented residents be informed about the resources available and the accompanying procedures.
