  • To decrease the act of suicide among teens in Jackson Public Schools.

 

 

Past Policy  key legislation and milestones including significant policy and funding shifts, major studies, etc.


  • A organization called The National Youth Sucide Prevention Strategy (NYSPS) is about providinga comprehensive and approach to youth suicide prevention for Australians. There goals are preventing permature death from sucide among young people, reducing the incidence and prevalance of suicidal ideation and behavior. 

  • Some of the different aspects that NYSPS included in their program are: policy and planning, research and evaluation, comunications, education and training, networking and intersectoral collaboration and comunity development.

  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a program called the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP), in 2001. The NSSP is a combination of researchers and clinician to strategize on actions that can be prevented from teen suicide.

  • The NSSP also provide information on social change in which the individual works on transitioning attitudes toward mental illness. 

  • the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention inorder to support and prevent youth suicidal. Later, the Act transformed into a law called the National Suicide Prevention Resoucres Center.

  • Congress passed the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act in 2004, which collected $82 million dollars over the past three consective years towards suicide prevention.

  • Jackson Public Schools policy for teen depression and suicide are: research and evaluation, after school leadership programs, mentoring, school couseling, affirmative attitudes, and create a group called GPI (Get Parents Involved). 

  • Research and evaluation will give every student the equal opportunity to take a survey and be evaluated.

  • The after school leadership programs will help teach students how to lead and prepare them to be successful in life.

  • The mentoring, Big Brother Big Sister, will give the students the ability to talk to their peers and be helped with school work and anything else that is needed to be learned (resumes, filling out applications, and studying for the ACT).

  • School couseling will be given to each and every student, even if that student feels that he/she does not need it. This will give the students the chance to let the school couselor know what is going on with them and their student body.

  • Affirmative attitudes is a role that every faculty member and teacher must play at all times. This will try to help students cut back on voilence and it will aslo let them know that somebody does care about them.

  • The school must create a group called GPI (GET PARENTS INVOLVED). With this organization being created, it will aware parents whats going on at school, it will help parents and faculty to understand better what the problem is and how it can be solved.
