Policy Options / Model Programs

These model programs are examples of programs and policies that have been implements in their respective communities and have used storm water management techniques and practices successfully.  These models focus on decreasing storm water runoff, and can in turn be used to decrease discharge in Siena College and the greenway corridor.

Glossary of Terms

  • Albany Rural Cemetery – burial ground in Albany, NY
  • CWA – Clean Water Act
  • Discharge – amount of water produced from a storm event that is now infiltrated into the ground
  • Ecosystem – system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment
  • EPA – Environmental Protection Agency
  • Erosion – the geological process of wearing or grinding something down, such as sediment, and disposing it elsewhere
  • Greenway Corridor – environmentally friendly pathway that highlights nature, the wildlife, and other green amenities in the region
  • Impervious – not allowing infiltration to occur
  • MS4 – Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems
  • MSGP – Multi-Sector General Permit
  • Non-Point Source – any source of pollution in which its origin cannot be traced to a single source
  • NPDES – National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
  • NPDS – National Poison Data System
  • NYDEC – New York Department of Environmental Conservation
  • Point Source – a single identifiable localized source of pollution
  • Peak Flow – the maximum flow expected to enter a facility, point of highest flow
  • Runoff – water flow that occurs when soil has accumulated its max capacity and excess water flows downstream over ground surfaces
  • SDWA – Safe Drinking Water Act
  • SPDES – State Pollutant Discharge Elimination system
  • Storm water – water that originates during precipitation events. Storm water management can be a real problem in urban areas due to their impervious surfaces. These impervious surfaces cause runoff to occur, which filters this water into our streets and backyards. This can lead to floods and other types of environmental damages that could destroy habitats for the local wildlife. In addition, this water can become contaminated with products like fertilizers, prescription drugs and household chemicals and filter into our water supply, which endangers the lives of citizens who will use that drinking water.
  • Stormwater management – a system that handles water produced during precipitation events
  • Surface water – water collecting on the ground or in a stream, river, lake, wetland, etc.
  • Sustainable – provide a way of life that provides the necessities of life without overusing our natural resources
  • SWPPS – Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans
  • Watershed – an entire geographical area that drains tributaries, rivers, and other water flow into a specific body
