Glossary of Terms:
CWA – Clean Water Act
Discharge – amount of water produced from a storm event that is now infiltrated into the ground
Ecosystem – system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment
EPA – Environmental Protection Agency
Erosion – the geological process of wearing or grinding something down, such as sediment, and disposing it elsewhere
Greenway Corridor – environmentally friendly pathway that highlights nature, the wildlife, and other green amenities in the region
Impervious – not allowing infiltration to occur
MS4 – Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems
MSGP – Multi-Sector General Permit
Non-Point Source – any source of pollution in which its origin cannot be traced to a single source
NPDES – National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
NPDS – National Poison Data System
NYDEC – New York Department of Environmental Conservation
Point Source – a single identifiable localized source of pollution
Peak Flow – the maximum flow expected to enter a facility, point of highest flow
Runoff – water flow that occurs when soil has accumulated its max capacity and excess water flows downstream over ground surfaces
SDWA – Safe Drinking Water Act
SPDES – State Pollutant Discharge Elimination system
Storm water – water that originates during precipitation events
Stormwater management – a system that handles water produced during precipitation events
Surface water – water collecting on the ground or in a stream, river, lake, wetland, etc.
Sustainable – provide a way of life that provides the necessities of life without overusing our natural resources
SWPPS – Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans
Watershed – an entire geographical area that drains tributaries, rivers, and other water flow into a specific body
