This policy brief examines the scope, past and current policy, and best practices of intervention in terms of youth and runaway homelessness. The goal of this brief is to spur discussion and generate ideas in solving this issue.

 

 

 

Policy Options / Model Programs   specific policies or program models, grouped by type, that are profiled 


  • Intervention and Prevention Programs- Programs that seek to show support, interest, and care for at-risk adolescents tend to be most successful in preventing them running away or getting help if they have runaway.

  • Housing Programs- Programs that help runaway youth to leave street life and acquire proper housing are helpful in mitigating issues of runaway homelessness.

  • Counseling and Therapy- Individual counseling, mentoring, family therapy, peer-based, and experimental therapy have all been proven to be effective in reducing the risk of a youth running away from home.
