Goal Statement   one sentence that further defines the topic 


  • To decrease the effects of unemployment, domestic abuse, healthcare, and transportation on poverty in Walla Walla, specifically for Latinos.

 

 

Scope of the Problem: 


  • In 2005-2007, it was shown that in Walla Walla about the percentage of all people who's income was below the poverty level was 22.6%, the nation's percentage is 13.3%.

  • The percentage of families in Walla Walla who had an income below the poverty line was 16.9%, the nation's was 9.8%.

  • The percentage of families in Walla Walla who used food stamps was 13.9%, and the nations was 7.9%. [1]

  • The problems for the poor that exist in Walla Walla are pertinent especially for Latinos: the percentages for Latinos who's income is below the poverty line is higher than that of the White population in Walla Walla, as well as on a National scale. [2]

Policy Options:


  • Agree to the sales tax increase of .03% (to be on the ballot in Walla Walla February 9, 2010) so that the transit dependent people of Walla Walla may maintain their services. [3]

 

 

Key Organization/Individuals:  


  • Valley Transit-the primary source of public transit in Walla Walla. Provides a program called Job Access in which they pick up individuals outside of the traditional bus hours and pick them or take them from their place of work.

  • Blue Mountain Action Council:  an organization in Walla Walla that provides low-income people with self-help techniques and limited financial assistance. [4]

  • Young Women's Christian Association: an organization that focuses primarily on women and children in Walla Walla, specifically victims of domestic abuse.
