Policy Options / Model Programs   specific policies or program models, grouped by type, that are profiled

When researching policy options for child abuse for foster care, we ran across this website when to respond to child abuse. On childwelfare.gov it tells people how to respond to suspected child abuse and how to help the child and parent cope. We like these options on how to deal with such a tragic thing because we never would really know what to do if it really happens.

  • Explores research and practice on trauma focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), which is an evidence-based treatment approach shown to help children, adolescents, and their caregivers overcome trauma-related difficulties. It is designed to reduce negative emotional and behavioral responses following child sexual abuse, domestic violence, traumatic loss, and other traumatic events. The treatment—based on learning and cognitive theories—addresses distorted beliefs and attributions related to the abuse and provides a supportive environment in which children are encouraged to talk about their traumatic experience. TF-CBT also helps parents who were not abusive to cope effectively with their own emotional distress and develop skills that support their children.

  • National Child Traumatic Stress Network: Offers parents and caregivers tools to help them support children who have been victims of sexual abuse, information on the importance of talking to children and youth about body safety, and guidance on how to respond when children disclose sexual abuse. The information is available in both English and Spanish.
  • Gilgun (2009), University of Minnesota Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare: Identifies common factors associated with the perpetration of child sexual abuse and factors associated with recovery from being sexually abused. Protective factors to support recovery are also identified.
  • American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Facts for Families, 28, 2011 — Offers guidelines to consider when responding to children who say they have been sexually abused.
