Issue Brief Overview: Food Deserts taking over the country


 

 

Goal Statement: The mission for these programs is try combat food deserts in urban cities and and rural towns. 


 

  • Identifying Food Deserts:
    •   "Using the census tract as a unit of analysis for identifying food deserts, USDA, Treasury and HHS will give funding priority to projects and interventions that establish healthy retail outlets in defined food deserts"4
      •  They qualify as "low-income communities", based on having: a) a poverty rate of 20 percent or greater, OR b) a median family income at or below 80 percent of the area median family income; AND4
      • They qualify as "low-access communities", based on the determination that at least 500 persons and/or at least 33% of the census tract's population live more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store (10 miles, in the case of non-metropolitan census tracts).4

    • Food Desert: Urban neighborhoods and rural towns that do not have access to affordable food that is fresh and healthy. Fast food restaurants and convenience stores are the only available source of food instead of grocery stores and supermarkets. There is no access to good food. 1
