Glossary of Terms   key words or phrases that the layperson needs to know to understand this issue

  • Rethink-Kids Rethink New Orleans Schools (Rethink) is a non-profit, civic engagement program for youth ages 8 to 16 - predominantly middle schoolers. They empower young people to use their experiences, voices and leadership for positive change in their public schools. They believe that students are the true stakeholders when it comes to education. They deserve decision-making power as New Orleans rebuilds the public school system that is meant to serve them.

  • Recovery School District-The Recovery School District (RSD) is a special state school district administered by the Louisiana Department of Education. Created by legislation passed in 2003, the RSD is dedicated to turning underperforming schools into successful schools.

  • Mood Detector- The “mood detector” is a fictional device that would serve the purpose of being able to detect the mood of the students as they walk through the school doors, and depending on the mood of the student, they would be directed to class or to a counselor or social worker. For instance, if a student is feeling angry or sad, they would be able to receive assistance from a counselor or social worker to help the student cope with the issues that they have been dealing with.

  • Restorative Practice- Is A talk-it-out approach to foster dialogue between aggrieved students. Students are taught basic social skills to problem solve and lower tensions in schools.
