Glossary of Terms


  • Physical abuse: abuse involving contact intended to cause pain, injury, or other physical suffering or harm.
  • Sexual abuse: 1. the forcing of unwanted sexual activity by one person on another, as by the use of threats of coercion 2. sexual activity that is deemed improper of harmful, as between an adult and a minor or with a person of diminished mental capacity
  • Emotional abuse: refers to long-term situation in which one person uses his or her power of influence to adversely affect the mental well-being or another; emotional abuse can appear in a variety of forms, including rejection, degradation, isolation, corruption, exploitation, and invoking fear
  • Neglect: to fail to do or carry out as through careless or oversight
