This policy option or model program profile relates to the following issue overview(s):
Goal Statement
- To redevelop the brownfields for everyday human use.
Policy Options / Model Programs
These model programs focus on different approaches that have been taken to redevelop brownfields in different places in North America. These three model programs show different approaches that are used to redevelop brownfields. They also explore the different engineering and economic methods that can be used to lower the material and economic cost in the processes of redeveloping a brownfield.
Local/State/National Information
Glossary of Terms
- Annealing Furnace: A furnace used in heating steel to, and holding at a suitable temperature, followed by relatively slow cooling. The purpose of annealing may be to remove stresses, to soften the steel, to improve mach-inability, to improve cold working properties, to obtain a desired structure. The annealing process usually involves allowing the steel to cool slowly in the furnace
- Billet: A section of steel used for rolling into bars, rods and sections. It can be a product of the ingot route, or increasingly today produced directly by continuous casting.
- Brownfield: A piece of industrial or commercial property that is abandoned or underused and often environmentally contaminated, especially one considered as a potential site for redevelopment.
- Greenway Corridor: A corridor of undeveloped land, as along a river or between urban centers, that is reserved for recreational use or environmental preservation. It can also be used to connect local busing and promote local tradition.
- Leachate:
- A product or solution formed by leaching, especially a solution containing contaminants picked up through the leaching of soil.
- (Earth Sciences / Geological Science) water that carries salts dissolved out of materials through which it has percolated, esp polluted water from a refuse tip.
- Rolling Mill: A factory in which metal is rolled into sheets, bars, or other forms.
